- Grand Hotel Millennium Sofia, Ballroom and Online, 9:00 a.m.
The event
THE CONTEXT
The global energy landscape has been impacted by increased market uncertainty due to the conflict in Ukraine. Already before the conflict, the rebound in energy demand triggered supply constraints and price spikes for multiple commodities and across industries. Additionally, the long-term shift to low-carbon energy systems continues to gain momentum and has been accelerating in several respects.
In this context, Bulgaria meets new challenges - the dependence on power resources and the stalled energy transition are among the biggest ones. Prices of electricity, energy support to the business and finding new reliable gas suppliers were the most urgent tasks for the local governments in 2022. But from now on the main focus will turn on the European goals for affordable, secure and sustainable energy.
The measures of the European Commission’s plan REPowerEU needs to be included in the national recovery plan of every EU country. This will offer member states additional funds to accelerate the end of the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels while tackling the current climate and energy crises. The future of energy could be secured by massive scaling-up and speeding-up of renewable energy and innovations.
